About The Canadian Disc Dog Derby

Canadian Disc Dog Derby Series
Toss/Fetch Stakes Challenge

The Canadian Disc Dog Derby Series is a furthest catch stakes competition. Each player pays an entry fee and the winner(s) receive 50% of the pot* at the conclusion of the series. *25% to Mens division winner & 25% to Womens division winner

The Derby season starts with the first Derby offered in any given year, and ends in October of that year. All sanctioned Derby’s must be held between January and October of any given year and all Derby records/fees must be received by the Derby Director before October 31st of the current Derby year, in order to qualify for inclusion in the Derby Results.

In this first year of the Canadian Disc Dog Derby, two Derby’s may be held in each designated region. These regions have been designated based on canine disc activity in those regions:
1. Eastern Ontario (Ottawa area)
2. Quebec
3. Southern Ontario
4. Alberta

*If you know of another region in which the sport of canine disc is competitive please let us know so that we can include that region in the Derby.

Anyone can compete in the Canadian Disc Dog Derby, and players may compete with as many dogs as they like. There is no membership or club/organization affiliation required to compete in, or host a Disc Dog Derby. The Canadian Disc Dog Derby is an independent disc competition event. You may host a Derby on its own as a stand alone event, or include a Derby as an added event in conjunction with another disc contest you are hosting.
The Canadian Disc Dog Derby was inspired by The Quadruped (www.thequadruped.com) , and the Derby rules have been made with input and help from both Canadian and U.S. competitors. Thank you so much to all who helped with the making of the rules & thus, the creation of the Canadian Disc Dog Derby.

Rules

Canadian Disc Dog Derby Rules

The catch must be made with the disc in flight. If the disc tips the ground on the catch, the catch does not count.

The distance is determined by where the dog ‘lands’ with his back feet.

Dogs may ‘free start’ > meaning that the dog can be anywhere on the field up to the 30yd marker

Handlers must throw from behind the throwing line, but may be anywhere on the field at other times

Each dog/handler team will receive a 3 minute maximum to make 3 throws. The longest throw counts towards their score. All 3 catch distances must be recorded. And all missed attempts must also be recorded as misses.

Allowed Disc Types = Hyperflite Competition Standards (K-10’s); Whamo Fastbacks; Hero 235

Each Derby will consist of three heats.

Where there are 5 competitors or less >
The top 3 scoring dogs in Heat One, move onto heat two.
The top 2 scoring dogs from Heat Two, move onto heat three
Top scoring dog wins that Derby

Where there are more than 5 competitors and fewer than 15 competitors >
The top 7 scoring dogs in Heat One move onto heat two
The top 4 scoring dogs from Heat Two move onto heat three
Top scoring dog wins that Derby

Where there are more than 15 competitors >
The top 10 scoring dogs in Heat One move onto heat two
The top 5 scoring dogs in Heat Two move onto heat three
Top scoring dog wins that Derby

Each Derby will offer a Mens Division and a Womens Division

Breaking Ties:
At a given event ties will be broken with a one throw Sudden Death Throw Off

Determining the Overall Derby Champion (& winner of the cash prize)
· Because the wind is a large factor in throwing long, and not all events will be subject to the same wind conditions; and competitions will be held in different regions which prohibits the top scoring teams from each Derby from meeting up in a final Championship match …… a point system will be used to determine the overall Derby Winner
> All catches in each Derby will be measured, and all misses will be recorded
> The point system will be executed in two ways, and then added together for an overall score

1) The Winner of each individual Derby is awarded 10pts; 2nd place is awarded 8pts; 3rd place is awarded 6pts; and so on.

2) The longest toss/catches in each region/Derby are put up against eachother. Because of heats and advancing rounds, the longest throw/catch doesn’t always win. The team with the longest throw/catch in the individual Derby contest is awarded 10pts; 2nd place gets 8pts; 3rd place gets 6pts; and so on ….

The points from 1 and 2 for each competitor are then added together to determine an overall winner. By adding the overall points for both competition wins and longest toss/catch, there should be little variance in points from region to region, and this should keep things fair across the board.

The Ultimate Tie Breaker for the Overall Champion:

the system for breaking ties is:

1) the team with the most competitors in their division wins
2) the team with the fewest missed catches
3) the team with the longest recorded toss/catch
….. in that order

Hosting A Derby

Anyone can host a competition in any area > the Derby series is not exclusive to any club or organization, and no memberships are required. If you would like to host a Derby either as a stand alone event or in conjunction with a disc event you are already hosting, please contact rowdydiscdog@yahoo.com for an application/sanction form. Once your Derby is booked it will be
posted on the Southern Ontario Disc Houndz website and also on the Canadian Disc Dog Derby site so that other potential hosts & competitors will know when/where the Derby’s are being held.

In order to host a Disc Dog Derby you must have a long enough field to accomodate a furthest catch contest. A minimum length of 120ft is suggested, unless of course you know that you will have handlers who throw further than 120ft, in which case a long enough field to accomodate your anticipated longest thrower will be necessary.

The Canadian Disc Dog Derby will supply you with 20 score sheets and you may make extra copies if your entries exceed 20 competitors. You will also be supplied with Award Certificates for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. All score sheets & DDD fees MUST be submitted to the Canadian Disc Dog Derby director within 2wks following your contest. The Canadian Disc Dog Derby fee is $10 per dog/handler team. Disc Dog Derby hosts may charge a fee over and above the DDD fee guideline, to offset their expenses.

Email to rowdydiscdog@yahoo.com if you would like to host a Derby in your region
